The Ghorepani Poonhill Trek is one of the most popular short treks and also referred to as Annapurna Panorama Trek. Ghorepani is the village just below the poon Hill where you can stay the night before going up the hill to see the sunrise, view of the mountain in the morning. Ghorepani Poonhill is located to the North-East of Pokhara in the border of two District i.e. Myagdi District and Kaski District. The Poonhill is beside the village of Ghorepani in Dhaulagiri. It takes around 3-4 days to reach Poon Hill from Pokhara City, many guides will extend the days to 7-8 days for extra sightseeing in the area.

How to get there

This trek will begin from Pokhara and end there like other trekking routes in Annapurna except for the Annapurna circuit. Pokhara is 200 km west of Kathmandu city. Daily tourist buses run from Kathmandu to Pokhara takes around 7-8 hours. Most of the domestic airlines fly to Pokhara from Kathmandu every day. 

The starting point of your trek is after a 1-hour drive from Pokhara, crossing the suspension bridge over the Modi Khola river and you will continue trek slowly passing through terraced fields and villages with stunning views of Machhapuchare and Annapurna Peaks and continue your journey to Tikhedhunga.

After Tikhedunga, you will pass through villages and the Rhododendron forest after walking for a while you will get to Ghorepani. After night spending at Ghorepani, you must walk uphill to the viewpoint to see the first light of sunrise illuminates in Tukuche Peak and Dhaulagiri Peak.

Best time to trek ghorepani poon hill trek

The best time to trek in Ghorepani Poon Hill is from September to early December and from January to May. In this time of year, the climate is warm, the sky remains clear and the wind flow remains comparatively slower than other months.

Since the trek is an easy one at fairly low altitudes, winter trekking is also possible. It is a good option for those who wish to enjoy the best mountain views with extra snowfall. Monsoon trekking is possible but not recommended. Monsoon is the offseason for trekking and good reason. The weather tends to be unpredictable during this period and cloudy skies mean subpar views as well.

This trek is an easy trek suitable for the people who love walking Exercising and jogging regularly for a few weeks before the trip is a good plan to increase strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be a good option but none technical skill can take part in this trek. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, epilepsy and blood diseases should inform consult your doctor before booking the trip. 

Itinerary of Ghorepani Poonhill Trek

Day 01: Drive from Pokhara to Nayapul and trek to Tikhedhunga (1,540m), 1-2 hour drive and 3-4 hours trek

Day 02: Trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani (2,860m), 5-6 hours trek

Day 03: Hike to Poonhill (3,210m) and trek from Ghorepani to Tadapani (2,600m), 6-7 hours trek

Day 04: Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk (1,950m), 2-3 hours trek

Day 05: Trek from Ghandruk to Nayapul (1,070m) and drive to Pokhara, 3-4 hours trek and 1-2 hour drive

Get your TIMS Card

TIMS card is only valid for a single entry to the park every time you exit you will need a new TIMS card to enter the park again. If you are planning to do several other trekking inside the Annapurna region it is cheaper to stay inside the park than go back to Pokhara after every trekking.
